Welcome to our November 2007 Newsletter
WeatherThe month of November on Corfu is always changeable regarding the weather and already this month we have seen temperatures as low as 6 Celsius and winds as strong as force 8. The picture above was taken from St. Spyridon beach, close to the furthest northern point of the island on Saturday 10th November. You can see snow on the mountains of Albania on the other side of the channel - we would not normally expect this until January. This weather, while unusually cold for this time of year, is dramatic and invigorating and while travelling around the island we saw many people enjoying a brisk walk in the blustery conditions.
Renovations in the Old TownIn the old part of Corfu Town, over the summer, we have been noticing an increase in renovation activity with a number of buildings, being clad in scaffolding and protective covering and being renovated completely from the pavement to the roof. It is a very encouraging sign when all the owners of a building are coming into agreement to work together and especially when the outcome of the renovation shows attention to the Corfiot style: stone details exposed and featured, traditional colour schemes being used and traditional wooden shutters being restored or replaced. Now we are seeing some of the buildings being uncovered and the nice results of months of renovation.
Rental PropertiesDemand for rental properties is also increasing both within Corfu Town and also around the island. Acknowledging this trend, we have introduced a new letting service with certain and carefully selected properties. Our core business remains property sales, but we are coming across property owners who would prefer to let their properties long term, rather than sell them. Property rentals we have dealt with, vary from 350 euros to 2,000 euros per calendar month - with rental contracts signed for an initial 2-3 years. For example an 80sqm apartment in Kassiopi could cost 350 euros per month and a 220sqm apartment with sea views in the old part of Corfu Town could be 2,000 euros per month. Rental contracts are generally in favour of the tenant should they wish to continue their tenancy after the initial 2-3 year period. By law the term can automatically be extended by further 2-3 year periods up to 9 years.

Lesser known facts about CorfuWhile Turkish rule (1453-1821) left Greece sleeping in spiritual poverty, another wind was blowing in the Ionian Islands. Education and the culture of western civilisation were the gifts of the various occupants. Under the influence of the Venetians, the French and the British, Corfu developed a particular culture of its own. All three occupying powers left their mark, not only on the daily lives of the islanders but also on the physical development of the island. The influence is plain to see: in their houses, food, festivals, the narrow streets and squares, their customs, language, even their Christian names. Here were established: - The Ionian Academy – the first Greek University
- The Philharmonic Society, one of whose members, N.Mantzaros, composed the Greek national anthem
A moment in Corfu’s History “From thence Nausithoos, the godlike, had removed them, and led and settled them in Scheria far from men that live by toil. About the city he had drown a wall, he had built houses, and made temples for the gods, and divided the ploughlands“ HOMER, Odyssey, VI, 7-10 Tradition identifies Corfu as the Homeric Island of Scheria or the island where the Phaeacians hospitably received Odysseus on his return from Troy. It is also reputed to be the island where the Argonauts found refuge from the Cholchic fleet after they had acquired the Golden Fleece. Both myths seem to stress the hospitality of the Phaeacians as well as the capability of their maritime skills. The “rudderless boat” was established as the characteristic symbol of the island and is still in use today.
