Kourti comes from the French word « cour» which means courtyard. In Corfu they used to name country houses that belonged to nobles using this prefix. The current owner’s family bought Kourti in 1878. The estate consists of various buildings, store houses, cisterns, olive press, a chapel, and the main house. It is very difficult to estimate the date of the buildings as they were built in different periods. According to surveys some of the buildings are dated before 1700. All the buildings are placed in an almost circular fashion and some of them are part of the courtyard wall. As all the buildings had openings inwards only towards the courtyard, from the outside the estate looked like a small fortress. In the middle of the courtyard is the main two storey house. There is an engraved ensignia on top of the main entrance gate: « MICHELLE- STEFANO TRIVOLI- PIERI MDCCXX (1770) which is the name of the families who owned the estate before the current owners. All the buildings were renovated and have been altered internally in recent years by the current owners. There is the possibility to build another 2,600 sq.m in the surrounding land. In 1983 the estate was granted as a « work of art and preservable historical monument» because it represents Heptanese architecture [Architecture typically representative of the Ionian Islands]. As it is a monument any renovation must follow the lines of the antiquities department and must preserve the buildings external appearance in respect of their original state. |
